Your port choice has only an effect on the initial difficulty assigned to your miner. VarDiff will automatically adjust your difficulty up or down until your rig submits shares at the pool's preferred interval of one share per roughly 15 seconds.
I suspected something like that. The stratum protocol consumes so few bytes that you'd need to push hundreds of updates per second to all miners to reach those numbers.
Well, Litecoin uses the Scrypt algorithm. I'm afraid that won't work.

Yeah. It sucks. The daemon once again got stuck. I've already triple checked everything and its not a configuration or server capacity issue. Fixed now.
