Monero Forking To Change PoW Algorithm

Devon 6 years ago updated by Oliver 6 years ago 7

For those that don't know Monero is forking

https://getmonero.org/2018/02/11/PoW-change-and-key-reuse.html

It appears companies have begun developing ASIC miners for Monero and thus this fork. Think it's to counter the Bot-nets also.

Hopefully no one has bought a Cryptonight ASIC miner, as BitMain will not be offering refunds and it's likely to only be good as a door stopper after the fork.

I hope ccminer from tpruvot will support it.

The Monero team plans to contribute - or already did - patches to the following miners: Lucas Jones' CPU miner, wolf0's CPU miner, ccminer-cryptonight, sgminer-gm, xmr-stak, xmrig-nvidia, wolf-xmr-miner.

Regular Xmrig CPU has also been updated to support the fork

I also found this on xmrig's account:

"Monero will change PoW on March 28, that means Monero cryptonight will not compatible with other cryptonight based coins. Also small hashrate drop expected...New miner also can be continue use with other cryptonight coins without changes, I checked ETN, SUMO and ITNS."

The pool code is already prepared for the fork.

They moved the fork to 2018-04-06

"Move v7 fork to 1546000 to give more update time"

so can i change to the new miner and work properly on the old XMR and the new XMR fork when it starts?
