You can't accommodate everyone, people have different tool preferences. We've been running on Slack for some time already and I doubt we would be changing away from it.
Unless the pool operator wants to open up multiple channels of course, but I have a feeling moderating another channel is least of his problems now. You are of course free to run your own IRC or Matrix if you want to.
I do understand the choice of slack over irc (you can just login from every browser and not lose chat history) - but it seems weird to me to not have a irc channel on freenode which is, i think, still standard.
There are discord bots who link discord and irc, I guess the same would exist for slack. The question about moderating another channel would not apply, since they both will be the same channel.

Agreed, that'd be useful. If not IRC, we could do just Matrix.
We have a slack channel that's invite only. Invite requests will come soon.
Some people, myself included, don't like Slack, or prefer other services for this kind of chat. I think that's why OP proposed IRC.
I am proposing Matrix since it's more privacy oriented and besides, Matrix can bridge seamlessly to most IRC servers.

I think we'll stick to Slack for now. I'm already at max capacity juggling the various communication mediums like Twitter, Slack and the forum.
